Since President-elect Trump and some lawmakers in the incoming Republican-controlled Congress have vowed to limit federal involvement in K-12, including the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education, which oversees funding and programming for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), many are expressing their concerns as to what may occur.

Under the first Trump presidency, the then-president’s proposed budgets for special education funding in fiscal years 2018-21 were slightly lower than what Congress ultimately approved, which ultimately resulted increased federal funding levels for special education. In fact, Congress even rejected multiple attempts by the first Trump administration to eliminate funding for Special Olympics.

Thus, those issues and many others have fueled much speculation and great concern.
