On February 20, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear TJ v. Fairfax County School Board. The case challenged admissions policies at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. In May 2023, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the school board.
Plaintiffs in this Virginia case alleged that a 2020 admissions policy revision has resulted in an intentional and discriminatory drop in Asian American enrollment at the school. The school board claimed that the intent of the policy change was to diversify incoming classes weighing experience factors and eliminating entrance exams and teacher recommendations. Since the new policy was put into place, Asian American enrollment decreased from 73% to 54% in the first year of its implementation.
